Timber!
We had a super productive day today, but it was not at all what we thought we'd be doing with our day. I had been planning to spend some time on the Man Cave, which I did a bit, but the husband, M, took advantage of the beautiful weather to get some outdoor projects done.
When he came home from grocery shopping this morning (he goes out every Sunday morning for groceries - yes, I am the luckiest woman in the world ) he announced that he was going to take down "that ugly bush-like thing in the front."
Honestly, I wasn't really sure which bush-like thing he was talking about. They're all kind of ugly.
He was talking about this one:
I didn't realize exactly how ugly that thing was until it was gone. Our front entryway now seems so much larger, and I love how the front windows are more exposed. The house looks more inviting already! We plan to remove all of the little shrubs and replace them, but we're waiting until next spring to do the planting.
Wonder husband didn't stop with a little shrub, though. Once he got the feel of the chainsaw in his hands, there was no stopping him!
On each side of the front of the house there are these scrawny pine trees. Besides being unattractive, we knew from Day 1 that we wanted to remove them because they are too close the house. This one here actually had vines that were starting to grow into and around the drain pipe.
This tree is actually pretty tall, so we didn't want to try to take it down ourselves. Instead, M gave it a little shave and extracted the vines from the drain pipe. It will be taken down entirely by some family members who have much more experience removing trees than we do.
I didn't get any before pictures (M was too fast for me today), but this little guys sits just to the left of the house, next to the garage. Since it was a lot smaller than the one on the right, M decided he could handle it himself. See the power lines right behind him? No joke, just before he starts the chain saw he says "Don't worry, it's nowhere near the power lines." Guess what happened when to took the top of the tree off? You guessed, it - it totally bounced off the power lines. No damage to either the power lines, the house, or M, fortunately.
Here are some shots of M taking the rest of the tree down, after the top had it's little, um, "collision" with the power lines.
Success! Little tree is officially gone!
We still have a lot to do with the front yard, but it's looks great already, just with those few changes. I feel like you can see more of the house, and it not longer looks like it's hiding behind the shrubs.
M made like a dozen trips (OK, I exaggerating) to the recycling center to get rid of the shrubs and trees. How cute is this, though. Little Man had to get into the action. Here he is helping Daddy by loading a wood chip into the car.
The Little Lady also helped by picking up all of the sticks in the front yard so Daddy could mow the entire yard later in the afternoon.
Thanks, M, for taking care of everything outside! I promise to do some more painting in the Man Cave this week so you can sit back and relax one of these days :)

He has been trying to cut it back, away from the front door, but it is still this funny shape and kind of spindly and not at all attractive.
A couple of whacks with the chainsaw, and bam! the ugly shrub is gone.

The next tree is a great example of why we're going to wait for help with the big one to the right of the house.
